04Our story
Today
G The Grand Hotel
The elegant eclectic façade of the Grand Hotel Duchi d’Aosta, recently restored to its original splendour, is adorned with Corinthian pilasters, floral friezes and a balustrade with statues representing Trieste and Mercury.
Initially called Hotel Vanoli in 1908, it assumed its current name in 1973, maintaining a refined Central European style that makes it unique and familiar.

1873
C The Creation
The Grand Hotel Duchi d’Aosta, built in 1873, stands on a historical area which has an equally ancient vocation: the management of public catering establishments and hotels.

1300
S History
A story that goes back to in 1300 with the Hospitium Magnum, a private hotel with stabling, adjacent to the Osteria del Dazio.

1600
I The illustrious
Among the hotel’s illustrious guests in the 17th century were: Archduchess Maria Magdalena of Austria, wife of Cosimo de Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany (1608), Infanta Maria of Spain, wife of Ferdinand I (1631), Federico Gonzaga Duke of Mantua (1662).

1700
O Originally
In 1727, the municipality built the Osteria Grande, which was later restored and enlarged in 1765 under the name Locanda Grande.
The hotel hosted famous people such as Nelson, Lady Hamilton, Queen Maria Carolina of Naples, Winckelmann, Emperors Joseph II and Leopold II, Casanova, Goldoni, Murat, and Prince Bernadotte.

1800
V The void
But the fervour of building renovation that pervaded the city from the first half of the 19th century could not fail to also invest the then Piazza Grande (now Piazza Unità d’Italia); In particular, in 1847 it was decided to demolish the Locanda Grande, creating a void that would not be filled until 1872.

1800
S An interesting fact
The story goes that the decision to demolish the Locanda Grande was intended to erase the memory of a tragic event that had taken place there back in 1768: the murder of the German archaeologist and art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann.
The Assicurazioni Generali, owners of the land, commissioned engineers Geiringer and Righetti to build the Hotel Garni, which was completed in 1873.
Right from the start the hotel is praised for its elegance, cleanliness, and excellent service.
